JOB SUMMARY:

The Post University Compliance & Contracts Attorney will serve as an entry-level legal advisor to institutional stakeholders (students, faculty, and staff), with a focus on collaboration, as supervised by University Counsel. The Compliance & Contracts Attorney will assist the legal and compliance departments with providing advice on matters including contracts, Title IX and ADA, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, and student and employee matters. This position includes a significant amount of drafting, reviewing, revising and negotiating contracts and other business documents and policies to support in-person and online educational programs, ensuring compliance with law and University policy. Additionally, the Compliance & Contracts Attorney will serve as an assistant coordinator for the University’s Title IX and Disability Services office, providing leadership, coordination and oversight of the University’s comprehensive programs and activities that ensure compliance with University policies and state and federal laws related to gender-based sexual misconduct. Will also be responsible for collaborating with departments across the University to provide main campus and online students seeking disabilities accommodations with the resources they need to achieve their academic goals. This position will be based in Waterbury, CT with 2 or 3 days a week in the office, and the remainder of the week will be remote. This role is an exciting opportunity for an attorney who is looking to practice in-house and seeks to marry legal skills with business acumen.

CORE ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible for contract matters in a variety of areas and issues, including, vendor and technology agreements, strategic partnerships and alliances, data privacy and security, international matters, intellectual property, and privacy laws
  • Assists with Title IX matters including:
    • Title IX case management
    • Training and compliance programs on Title IX matters
    • Work with campus partners to ensure the campus climate and environment is an inclusive and safe living, learning, and working environment for faculty, staff, and students
    • Identify and integrate best practices in Title IX investigations and models into the university knowledge base and practices
    • Be available on call when needed for Title IX response
  • Assists students with requests for reasonable accommodations under the ADA
  • Assists with University educational events related to Title IX and disabilities – both virtual and on-campus
  • Reviews all outgoing group student communications to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and best practices
  • Provides legal advice relating to ethical operations and compliance
  • Assists with international compliance for our growing international student population
  • Assists with intellectual property matters as requested
  • Supports the legal and compliance groups with other matters as requested involving areas of law such as GLBA, GDPR, NCAA, FERPA, TCPA, Title VI, and marketing (once these areas are learned) to ensure University compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Eager to learn and expand job knowledge to proactively keep abreast of changing regulations/statutes related to University business
  • Performs legal research, drafts and develops resource material, and performs educational outreach within the institution on legal and regulatory issues
  • Works in collaboration with associates throughout the University
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and performance required. Reasonable accommodations may enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited US law school
  • Must be admitted and in good standing in at least one state bar; attaining approved house counsel status in Connecticut is required
  • At least six months of legal experience (legal internships will be considered to meet experience criteria)
  • Experience in higher education is welcome, but not required, as this is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in this sector
  • Strong critical thinking and excellent legal analysis skills
  • Willing to learn the ropes and be heavily engaged in contract review, contractual provisions (such as copyright ownership, data privacy and protection, IT security, indemnification, insurance, etc.)
  • Must become fluent on laws, regulations and policies related to discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy and disability
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Ability to:
      • convey advice clearly and effectively
