What We Do

The SEI helps advance software engineering principles and practices and serves as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. The SEI works closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems. Our core purpose is to help organizations improve software engineering capabilities and develop or acquire the right software, defect free, within budget and on time, every time.

Position Summary

The SEI Vulnerability Analysis Team’s mission is to reduce the societal harm from vulnerable information systems and related processes. The Vulnerability Analysis Team Intern will contribute to a variety of core functions including:

  • Generating strategic insights by enabling ongoing cyber and AI vulnerability research and development (R&D)
  • Assisting with multi-party vulnerability coordination to address priority software vulnerabilities; and
  • Enabling ongoing R&D of next-generation vulnerability coordination platforms

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree granting program
  • Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission, this includes within the SEI and CMU community
  • You will be subject to a background check and must be eligible to work in the United States without Visa sponsorship
  • Able to work an internship during the summer 2025
  • Able to work onsite to the SEI Pittsburgh office

Duties:

  • Enable ongoing software vulnerability R&D efforts
  • Enable communication and/or coordination activities to address software vulnerabilities
  • Enable R&D of vulnerability coordination platforms

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity and software development concepts
  • Basic proficiency with a programming language (preferably Python)
  • Basic awareness of penetration testing concepts and/or tools
  • Potential to analyze code and system architectures to identify vulnerabilities
  • Ability to critically think and problem solve
  • Ability to collaborate internally with professional engineers and researchers
  • Willingness to learn new technologies with cross-functional teams
  • Skills in communicating technical matters clearly and effectively to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate externally with government, academia, and/or industry stakeholders

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with programming languages (preferably Python)
  • Experience with researching and resolving software vulnerabilities
  • Experience collaborating internally and/or externally to resolve software vulnerabilities
