JOB SUMMARY:
The University Facilities Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of campus facilities, including buildings, classrooms, laboratories, and other university infrastructure. This position involves performing routine inspections, responding to maintenance requests, troubleshooting mechanical systems, and ensuring the campus environment is safe and functional for students, staff, and visitors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintenance & Repairs: Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on buildings and facilities, including plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), lighting, doors, windows, and flooring.
- Electrical Systems: Understanding electrical wiring, circuit breakers, lighting systems, and outlets. Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical issues.
- HVAC Systems: Knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including troubleshooting, repairs, and routine maintenance.
- Plumbing: Skill in repairing pipes, fixtures, water heaters, and dealing with drainage systems.
- Carpentry: Ability to perform basic carpentry work, such as building or repairing structures, furniture, and fixtures.
- Painting and Finishing: Expertise in applying paints, varnishes, and other finishes to maintain the appearance of buildings and furniture.
- General Building Maintenance: Knowledge of general maintenance and repair work, such as fixing doors, windows, locks, and flooring.
- Routine Inspections: Regularly inspect facilities to ensure compliance with safety codes and identify maintenance needs.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Diagnose issues with building systems (e.g., electrical, HVAC, plumbing) and address repairs efficiently, minimizing disruptions to daily university operations.
- General Facility Support: Assist with setting up events and classes, including furniture moving, room preparation, and equipment setup.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all work is carried out according to health, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Inventory Management: Maintain an inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies required for maintenance and repairs.
- Customer Service: Respond promptly to maintenance requests submitted by faculty, staff, or students and communicate clearly about timelines and progress.
- Emergency Response: Be available for on-call or emergencies related to facility issues (e.g., flooding, power outages).
- Snow removal: Responsible for ensuring that campus pathways, parking lots, roads, and entrances are clear of snow and ice during winter weather conditions. This role supports the university’s commitment to providing a safe, accessible, and operational campus environment by responding to snowstorms, maintaining equipment, and performing related duties.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain logs of completed work, inventory, and maintenance schedules. Prepare reports on repairs and facility conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in facilities maintenance or a related field (e.g., construction, HVAC, plumbing).
- Knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building maintenance.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly.
- Familiarity with safety and regulatory compliance standards in facilities management.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with a variety of campus departments.
- Physical stamina to perform tasks that may include lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for long periods.
- Eligible candidates must possess a CT Driver’s License with a clean driving record. Post University uses MVR reports as part of our pre-employment screening process.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position with varying shifts, including weekends or evenings, based on university needs.
- On-call availability for emergency repairs.
- Physical labor, including the use of hand tools and heavy equipment.

- Physical ability to climb, work in tight spaces, walk long distances, and work in varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift to 25 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds frequently, and occasionally lift over 100 pounds.
- Demonstrated ability to perform tasks requiring significant physical effort including climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and repetitive motion.
