Description This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. The Inpatient Medical Social Work Coordinator serves as a member of the Inpatient Medical Social Work team and provides a variety of clinical interventions in the acute medical care setting. The incumbent is required to exercise independent judgment and decision making and have extensive skills in utilizing VA and community resources.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  1. Maintain confidentiality and complies with professional ethics according to professional and department standards.
  2. Adhere to all documentation standards and timelines to ensure appropriate follow up can occur across all aspects of the Veteran's care.
  3. Act as a consultant to other team and staff members.
  4. Ensure that the patient/families are involved in all phases of the patient care process.
  5. Provide consultation and education to other professions regarding social work practice and VA policies and procedures.
  6. Supervise the practice of social work students as appropriate.
  7. Coordinate treatment across departments to facilitate continuity of care for Veterans.
  8. Intervene with appropriate individuals/departments/agencies regarding delays in service that may have an impact on quality of patient care, length of stay, or inappropriate admissions.
  9. Oversee daily operations of acute medical care Social Work, develops SOPs for program operations.
  10. Monitor acute medical care Social Work staff compliance with practice, standards and guidelines on documentation, workload, data entry, ethical practice, and service delivery.
  11. Provide analysis and evaluation of acute medical care Social Work program data and computerized programs to identify trends and needs to enhance quality of care service.
  12. Provide leadership, direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training, staff development and continuing education programs for acute medical Social Work staff.
  13. Maintain data and statistical compilations to comply with the Joint Commission, other accreditation bodies, VA and medical center policy and procedures.

Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g this part).
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

Preferred Experience: Minimum two years inpatient medical/acute care experience preferred.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.
