Amazon is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Industrial Design Engineer. This individual will deep-dive and challenge current processes, equipment, and procedures, in our North American fulfillment network, in order to come up with best-in-class fulfillment solutions. This individual will develop and improve the design and development of new and existing fulfillment centers. This individual will facilitate two-way communication between the design and implementation teams including creating and managing projects, programs, and processes.
A successful candidate will have an established background in developing high-performance physical automated flow systems, a strong technical problem-solving ability, excellent project management skills, and an internal motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment. The successful Industrial Design Engineer is an agile natural self-starter with the ability to keep relentlessly driving projects and various functional teams and individuals at all levels of the organization.
This role will be responsible for collaborating with Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and Internal design teams to engineer successful material handling and storage designs. This role will act as an important stakeholder in the design processes and will contribute by (not limited to) incorporating field feedback into designs, vetting vendor contracts, updating design specifications, managing vendor relationships, and tracking project risks. The Industrial Design Engineer will also manage roadmaps for complex and competing Hardware Installation and Technology integration proposals while driving coordination between technical teams and business representatives for robust solutions. This role requires the ability to identify dependencies and bottlenecks by utilizing key process indicators and by compiling inputs from various contributors.
Key job responsibilities
Own the design and development of engineering solutions for complex material handling challenges considering human/equipment interactions for the North America fulfillment network
Lead and coordinate concept and design development efforts for optimal solutions for the North America fulfillment network through equipment specification, material flow, process design, ergonomics, associate experience, operational considerations and site layout
Work closely with vendors, suppliers and other teams to execute solutions
Simultaneously manage multiple high-visibility projects and tasks while effectively influencing, negotiating, and communicating with internal and external business partners, contractors and vendors
Provide technical leadership for large-scale engineering projects
Conduct post mortem on designs after implementation in partnering with Safety and Manage work load and potentially direct one to two engineers
Engage customers to identify areas of opportunity within the process and performance
Build strong relationships with partner organizations within the company such as North America Start-up, North America Launch team, Worldwide Design team, North America Procurement, Information Technology, Loss Prevention, Facilities, Safety, Change Management and North America Operations
Conduct multi-disciplinary process improvement efforts to drive communication and performance
Technical writing skills to oversee specification and technical document creation
Ability to travel up to 50% to interact with internal and external business and technical leaders

About the team
Pre-Execution liaises with upstream Design Engineering teams to advocate on GES NA Ops Eng’s behalf. Their work ensures strong relationships with upstream partners, as well as project quality and shared ownership throughout the project lifecycle.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Process Engineering or related STEM field is required; or 2+ years of relevant Amazon experience.
4+ years experience in Design/Innovation, Research & Development, Manufacturing/Process/Industrial Engineering, or related fields.
Experience in technical leadership for large-scale engineering projects
Experience with complex MHE and packaging lines or process design based on Lean Manufacturing or Toyota Manufacturing System
Experience using MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software
Experience leading engineering design projects and interacting with cross-functional teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MBA, Master’s Degree or other advanced degree in Mechanical/Industrial/Process Engineering, Operations, Business Administration or related field and at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the specialty
3+ year experience with complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing.
Proficiency in AutoCAD 3D
Proficiency in running SQL queries and data mining
Experience in engineering and estimating material handling and storage systems
Operations Management/ Fulfillment/Distribution Center experience preferred
Capital project management skills.
Proficiency with concepts like system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, system analysis, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, and decision making.
Design-in-Safety experience
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment
Ability to manage, influence, negotiate, and communicate with external business partners and internal teams to meet organizational capacity needs

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $89,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
