Description About the Position: The incumbent will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, performing the full range of supervisory duties over a variety of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers in the repair and maintenance of navigation projects and flood control projects; and assigned to the Middle Capacity Fleet unit located in Pittsburgh, PA, which is part of the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet (R3F).This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor without more than normal supervision. Perform common duties as a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor. Work as a leader or journeyman trades and crafts employee. Work under the general direction of a higher graded employee to ensure the assigned work is completed properly, efficiently and timely; complete the work with minimal supervision or support and take full responsibility for my work. Have a good understanding of the majority of the trades and crafts fields and typically work with other various trades to produce a single end product. Always use proper work methods and possess a current knowledge of work procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives. Have some experience in the use of instruction manuals, technical manuals and drawings. Research and order parts, supplies and materials as necessary to keep a full-service repair shop fully functional. Have a general knowledge of workplace safety and demonstrate the knowledge on a daily basis. Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts, equipment, or systems are in hard-to-reach places. Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, and work in a tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside subjecting employee to varying climatic conditions, abnormal noises, temperature, danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, danger from attending moving machinery, falling overboard, electrical shock, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, possible drowning, and crankcase explosion. Life jackets are worn at all times while on deck.
