Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to the grade level of the position. This public notice will be used to fill the positions listed below at multiple grade levels and locations.
  • Mathematician: Grades GS-11 through GS-15
Applicant Expiration: Applications will expire 4 months after submission/resubmission. To remain eligible for consideration, reapplying is required.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting research on basic mathematical principles, methods, procedures, techniques, or relationships.
  • Developing mathematical methods to solve a variety of scientific, engineering, economic problems where precise specification of the relationships, rigor and economy of mathematical operations, and logical deduction are the controlling considerations.
  • Compiling detailed work plans showing milestones, and a backup of personnel and budgetary, needs when dealing with projects.
  • Preparing evaluation of test activities.
  • Adapting and apply existing mathematical methods and techniques in a specialized branch of mathematics to specific subject matter applications while recommending the most efficient means for conducting the research.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics OR
  • Combination of education & experience: courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as above, plus appropriate experience or additional education
NOTE: Total course work must have included differential & integral calculus &, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • GS-11:
    • At least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR
    • At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience utilizing application of specialized methods and techniques of the required field of mathematics; and gathering, analyzing, and processing of data and information to support work efforts OR
    • A combination of education & experience
  • GS-12:
    • At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, to include experienceadvising and providing technical assistance to scientific, engineering, mathematical and managerial personnel on the mathematical aspects of work
  • GS-13:
    • At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience reviewing scientific and mathematical studies and papers and converting results into practical recommendations and procedures
  • GS-14:
    • At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience formulating, conducting, organizing, and directing creative and independent research programs; and defining and selecting problems for investigation based on needed improvements to the state of the art in mathematical modeling
  • GS-15:
    • At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience providing operational and scientific expertise to explore research initiatives for a new generation; and overseeing policy development, plans, and operations in research initiatives and advanced technologies for future precision capabilities on a continuing or project basis

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience.
