Description These positions located in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for this park is June to Labor Day, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty June 2022

Serves as a lifeguard at one of three beaches, (Milford Beach, Smithfield Beach, and Turtle Beach in New Jersey), in the National Recreation Area. Responsible for public safety, water assists and rescues, enforcement of beach regulations, providing first aid and visitor information. Complies with standard operating procedures. Assists the Lead Lifeguard with planning and instruction of lifeguard skills and EMS training. Maintains EMS, rescue and other equipment. Ensures proper documentation of incidents and completion/submission of operational reports. Collects and accounts for lost/found property. At the beginning of each shift, must perform one hour of physical training, which may include but is not limited to running, swimming, and/or review of lifeguard skills.

Salary
GS-3 - $17.74 ph
GS-4 - $19.91 ph

Area Information: Located in the Pocono Mountains, just 80 miles west of New York City and 100 miles north of Philadelphia, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area attracts over 5-million visitors each year. The 70,000-acre park also includes the Middle Delaware National Scenic and Recreation Area and 26 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Nearby towns of Stroudsburg, PA, Port Jervis, NY, and Newton, NJ provide all services, including K-12 school, college, medical services and other community needs. Additionally, several smaller communities are adjacent to the park. Summers and winters are generally mild with average summer temperatures about 80 degrees, with some humidity, and average winter temperatures about 30 degrees. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-3 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: Have six months of general experience that demonstrates my ability to perform the work of the position such as, but not limited to dealing with the public, maintaining supplies/equipment and following oral and written instructions, etc. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year above high school. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.. To qualify for this position at the GS-4 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: Have at least six months of general experience that demonstrates my ability to perform the work of the position such as, but not limited to, dealing with the public, maintaining supplies/equipment and following oral and or written instructions, etc., AND have six months of specialized experience performing lifeguard duties (also, developing and administering a swimming program; serving as a swim instructor). You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least two years of study above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
