The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks. Seeking to combine the practical and the theoretical, the Robotics Institute has diversified its efforts and approaches to robotics science while retaining its original goal of realizing the potential of the robotics field. The facility includes approximately 100,000 square feet at the main Pittsburgh campus, another 100,000 square feet at the National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville and growing.
Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute is searching for an Engineer I to join their team. This is a great opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and ambitious work environment. You will Perform moderately complex engineering work requiring commonly employed technical knowledge related to the design, testing, installation and modification of equipment, or processes, or structures. Works with other engineering disciplines in the development and application of research or products.
Responsibilities:
- Design and deploy AI models for tasks such as human detection and interaction. Support system testing and troubleshooting to ensure real-world readiness.
- Develop and implement algorithms for autonomous control, SLAM and navigation. Ensure reliable communication between hardware components and the robotic system.
- Develops, modifies and maintains operating protocols/procedures and related technical documentation.
- Identifies operating or installation problems. Recommends design modifications and or new applications for equipment.
- In consultation with project managers and other researchers or engineers contributes to the technical design and development of components and equipment used in research and development.
- Integrate sensors like cameras, LiDAR, and radar with robotic systems to enable accurate perception and navigation. Use frameworks like ROS 2 to process and manage sensor data efficiently.
- Tests and analyzes the feasibility, design and operation and performance of equipment and components.

- Technical Writing experience
- 3-5 Engineering experience
- 3-5 years of Engineering design process experience
Requirements:
- Bachelor Degree in the field of Engineering

- OSHA - Hazardous Materials Safety Training
