The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center/Altoona VAMC consists of a parent site, located in Altoona, PA and 5 community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) located in DuBois, Huntingdon, Indiana, Johnstown & State College, PA. The medical center serves Veterans from a 14 county area in Central PA, providing exceptional health care in the areas of Acute Care, Behavioral Health, Diagnostic Services, Urgent Care, Long Term Care, Pharmacy, Primary Care, Social Services, Specialty Care & Women's Health.
The incumbent serves as a Housekeeping Aid in the Facilities Dept of the Altoona VA Medical Center (VAMC) performing a variety of internal and external general laborer duties, including moving of furniture, cleaning furniture, sanitation, housekeeping and laundry duties as assigned. The incumbent may be assigned to any designated area in VAMC to provide service to meet the needs of the Medical Center. As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties.
Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, beds, wheelchairs, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas. Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers and move furniture. Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with minimal supervision. The incumbent receives general supervision from the Housekeeping Officer or Housekeeping Aid Leader, or designee. The Housekeeping Aid Leader will be the primary supervisor providing general description of assigned duties while the employee carries out recurring tasks independently, in accordance with established procedures and policies.
Further duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Properly operates powered equipment which includes blowers, vacuums, pressure washers, compactors, pallet jackets and other similar furniture moving equipment, secures areas for cleaning to protect persons and property, safely and timely removes trash, cleans receptacles, cleans windows inside/out, and other cleaning activities, assists as directed in external and internal Event Setups, assists as directed in heavy lifting and moving of furniture in support of facility activities, moves, removes and replaces fixtures, trash receptacles, benches, chairs and other items safely and timely, properly operates riding equipment upon completion of training, wet vacuums, carpet cleaners, scrubbing machines, and other equipment as needed.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position requires performance of work which involves physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Indoor areas include adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling. Will also be exposed to outdoor elements for landscaping and snow removal.
