WGAL News 8, the Hearst Television NBC affiliate located in the Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, PA market, is looking for a dynamic and creative Part-time content producer to contribute to our digital platforms and our assignment desk. The right candidate will thrive in a competitive, fast-paced environment creating stand-out content for our website, mobile products and social media platforms, as well as help plan daily news coverage, assign field crews and react to breaking news. You must be an excellent storyteller who can edit and create content while facing intense competition under constant deadline pressure. Breaking news and weather are pillars of our coverage, and you must know how to maximize it all, while accomplishing daily responsibilities. Connecting and collaborating with teammates and viewers is critical. You will report to the Digital Content Manager.

Responsibilities

Write/edit and publish breaking news and weather, daily news, sports and enterprise feature stories for our station website, app, and other social media platforms
Write compelling headlines; especially for mobile and social media and carefully create mobile push notifications for breaking news/severe weather
Manage LIVE streams of newscasts and breaking news
Work with TV producers, reporters and anchors to ensure content is posted accurately and quickly
Listen to multiple police scanners throughout our market
Assist news management with content gathering and planning
Assist TV producers and reporters with story gathering – with a high emphasis on a people-oriented content
Keep track of crews in the field and communicate strategies
Furnish content and post it to all digital platforms, including sending push alerts
Contribute ideas to help grow our station’s platforms
Gather and organize press releases, emails, phone calls and viewer tips. Decide which will yield compelling content for newscasts and digital platforms
Requirements

1-3 years of experience in a professional television newsroom or web-publishing environment
Compelling news/editorial judgment and ability to make independent decisions
Excellent AP writing skills
Basic knowledge of video editing
Experience with social media best practices
Experience listening to police scanners and monitoring social media accounts to gather content and communicate with news makers
Flexibility to work different shifts (including overnights, nights and weekends), holidays on short notice to cover a 24-hour news cycle
Work well in an environment with frequent interruptions
Can gather information from multiple sources simultaneously and quickly push it out to anchors, reporters and producers
Be able to remain calm and level-headed during breaking news situations
Related military experience will be considered
In-person attendance is required
