Job Overview

TE Connectivity is seeking a PhD level materials development scientist to work in the Corporate Technology group in Fremont, CA. In this role, the successful candidate will work closely with other members of the materials development team to develop new polymeric and composite materials for applications in TE’s products spanning all business units. They will also provide consulting and support to TE’s internal business units on materials-related challenges. The ideal candidate will have a strong educational and research background in polymer and/or material science and excellent interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

  • Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct novel polymeric and composite materials development research to attain improved materials properties or additional functionality, for example, in the areas of:
  • Thermoplastic composites, elastomers, sealants/adhesives, coatings
  • It has functionality such as high voltage/temperature performance, flame retardancy, electrical conductivity, etc.
  • With processability such as injection molding, extrusion, spray coating/ink printing
  • Drive materials development work from the research phase to product application, including:
  • Have discussions with business units to understand their challenges and needs and define technology development projects
  • Perform experiments in the lab to test new material formulations
  • Perform materials evaluation and data analysis, and use results to make decisions about next steps and project direction
  • Communicate progress regularly to the business units and use their feedback to guide decisions about the next steps and project direction.
  • Capture new IP and write detailed reports to document projects after completion.
  • Give presentations about projects at internal meetings
  • Play a leading role in cross-functional teams
  • Provide technical guidance to internal business units regarding material performance and selection.
  • Perform literature/patent searches and scout commercially available technologies to understand the state of the art; build connections with external partners/vendors.
  • Participate in technical roadmap development and assessment of new technologies.

What your background should look like:

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Material Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
  • At least 5 years of experience in an industrial research environment
  • In-depth knowledge of polymeric and/or composite materials, including material chemistry, physical properties, formulation, structure-property relationships, and/or processing
  • Understanding polymer and composite characterization techniques, such as DSC, TGA, DMA, rheology, Instron, etc.
  • Understanding of polymer processing, including extrusion and injection molding; understanding of processing methods, such as spray coating and ink printing, also a plus
  • Highly self-motivated individual with a strong bias for action and impact
  • A strong team player with a positive, proactive, and professional attitude
  • Creative, innovative, and hands-on in the lab
  • Demonstrated capability to drive forward multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong problem-solving skills and technical ability
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills

  • COMPENSATION
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience: $183,900 - $275,800 (subject to change dependent on physical location)
  • Posted salary ranges are made in good faith. TE Connectivity reserves the right to adjust ranges depending on the experience/qualification of the selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
  • Total Compensation = Base Salary + Incentive(s) + Benefits
