The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at Carnegie Mellon University is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach to solving complex healthcare challenges. Located within CMU's College of Engineering, the department emphasizes the integration of engineering principles with biomedical sciences to address pressing medical and biological issues. The department is characterized by its focus on creating impactful technologies and therapies that improve patient care and advance biomedical innovation globally.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Scientist to support cutting-edge research in the areas of 3D bioprinting, stem cell maintenance, and tissue engineering under the guidance of Dr. Jaci Bliley and Dr. Adam Feinberg. The project is dedicated to building 3D bioprinted models to understand embryonic heart valve morphogenesis. This position is ideal for someone excited to contribute to translational research in regenerative medicine and eager to gain hands-on experience with emerging biotechnologies. The ideal candidate will have prior hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, preferably within a research-intensive or academic environment. This includes familiarity with standard lab protocols, ability to follow detailed experimental procedures, and comfort working with biological samples. Experience in sterile technique, routine equipment handling (e.g., centrifuges, biosafety cabinets, incubators), and data documentation is highly valued. Candidates who have worked in interdisciplinary teams or contributed to ongoing research projects are especially encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of 3D bioprinting platforms.
- Perform routine stem cell culture, including passaging, cryopreservation, and differentiation.
- Support experiments involving biomaterials, scaffold fabrication, and tissue constructs.
- Collect, process, and analyze experimental data using software such as ImageJ, GraphPad Prism, and/or R/Python.
- Maintain accurate and timely lab records, including lab notebooks and inventory.
- Support general lab operations, including equipment maintenance and compliance with safety protocols.
- Organize and maintain the laboratory environment to ensure experiments can proceed efficiently.
- Ensure ordering of supplies to make sure that experiments can proceed.
