Description This position is located within FEMA, Regional Offices, Region 3, Response Division, Operational Planning Branch. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience providing planning and operational guidance on topics related to climate science and meteorology including severe weather, flooding, extreme heat, and hurricanes. Fluency with National Hurricane Center forecast products used to forecast or inform preparedness or response to meteorological threats, hazards, and risks.

What will I do in this position if hired?

In this position, you will serve as an Emergency Management Specialist for Region 3, Response Division. Typical assignments include:

  • Leading and coordinating with jurisdictional partners regarding the delivery of severe weather, flooding, and hurricane season preparedness activities and processes, including after-action or continuous improvement functions.
  • Evaluating emergency plans and annexes ensuring appropriate integration of climate, severe weather, flooding, and hurricane preparedness and response activities and processes and that appropriately integrates with jurisdictional hurricane plans across Region 3.
  • Attending regional and national partner engagements and conducting outreach to those partners, as appropriate, regarding climate, severe weather, flooding, and hurricane preparedness and response.
  • Coordinating, administering, and delivering appropriate training opportunities for Region 3 staff and jurisdictional partners.
  • Providing Region 3 leadership with analysis and guidance regarding hazardous weather that may affect the Region 3 area of responsibility, equities, and partners.

Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 level, you must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience may be obtained in the federal government, a state or local government, or private sector, and must demonstrate the following:

  • Coordinating and delivering severe weather, flooding, and hurricane season preparedness activities and processes, AND,
  • Evaluating and developing severe weather, flooding, and hurricane related plans or standard operating procedures, AND,
  • Providing analysis and guidance using tools for storm forecasting, storm surge risk, or evacuation planning.
