What you will do

The Indirect Tax Manager is a critical member of the Volvo US corporate tax team. As the Indirect Tax Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of U.S. indirect tax, including sales and use tax compliance, audits and strategies in order to minimize tax liabilities and improve overall tax efficiency. This position works closely with finance, operations and other cross-functional teams. You will report to the Senior Director of Indirect Tax and will not have any positions reporting to you.

  • Responsibilities:
  • Manage third-party outsource service providers to ensure indirect tax returns are filed in a timely and efficient manner
  • Gather, reconcile and/or analyze source data for returns and audits
  • Participate and manage U.S. indirect tax audits with cross-functional teams
  • Monitor nexus footprint and filing requirements on an ongoing basis, including impact of changes in business activities and laws
  • Respond to customer sales tax inquiries
  • Manage use tax accrual process; claim and document manufacturing, resale and other applicable exemptions; support Purchasing group on use tax decisions
  • Review sales/use tax account reconciliations and analyze variances
  • Assist with sales tax software implementations and maintenance
  • Research product taxability and other sales/use tax issues
  • Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize tax efficiencies
  • Periodic travel to Volvo headquarters in Greensboro, NC and other Volvo facilities in U.S. as needed (< 15%)

Who are you?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive state and local sales/use tax experience with public accounting firm and/or multistate company, including demonstrated management skills
  • Experience using Thomson Reuters OITD or other indirect tax engine required
  • Able to work effectively to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple projects
  • Possesses highly developed verbal & written communication skills
  • Able to manage external consultants, processes & projects
  • Takes action and works independently in the absence of specific instructions
  • Able to build relationships and establish networks, internal and external
