Troops to Teachers


Troops to Teachers (TTT) was established in 1993 to assist transitioning service members and
veterans in beginning new careers as K-12 teachers in public, charter and Bureau of Indian
Affairs schools. The Department of Defense program facilitates veterans’ successful transition to
a teaching career by providing counseling, employment assistance and financial incentives for
service members and veterans, if eligible.

Program Eligibility


All current and former members of the United States Armed Forces, who retire or separate with
an honorable discharge, are eligible to apply for the Troops to Teachers program. Financial
assistance may be available for participants that meet application, service, and education
requirements.


Program Services


The TTT Program Office and 31 state grant offices provide the following services for participants:


• Individualized counseling and transition planning for participants
• Guidance on teacher certification and licensing requirements
• Employment opportunities and financial support, if eligible

History

Since inception, oversight and funding have been shared between the Departments of Defense and Education. The National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2013 transferred program policy funding and oversight responsibilities back to the Department of Defense. The Troops to Teachers Program Office is located within the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)a component of the Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA). The Program Office is responsible for day-to-day operations and management of the program.

Vision

Every service member interested in a career in teaching will receive assistance to transition his or her leadership, training, and core values to teaching in kindergarten through grade twelve schools.

Mission

  • Assist program participants with finding employment as a teacher when eligible

Goals

  • Reduce veteran unemployment
  • Improve American education by providing motivated, experienced, and dedicated personnel for the nation's classrooms
  • Increase the number of male and minority teachers in today's classrooms
  • Address teacher shortage issues in K-12 schools that serve low-income families and in the critical subjects - math, science, special education, foreign language, and career-technical education.
