This position is a journey-level professional civil/mining/environmental engineering position with a working title of Project Designer. The Project Designer performs a variety of journey-level civil/mining/environmental engineering work assignments that require the interpretation and application of standard techniques, procedures and guidelines, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications as needed. The primary responsibility is to apply engineering principles and practices to the design of Departmental projects for the reclamation of abandoned mine lands and associated mine-water impacts. Projects include, but are not limited to, surface mine reclamation, mine fire control, mine subsidence control, closure of mine openings, waterline extension/water supply replacement. Duties may also include abandoned mine drainage (AMD) remediation, active and passive AMD treatment facilities, evaluation, operation, monitoring, maintenance, and/or rehabilitation of existing passive and active AMD treatment systems.

The Project Designer may be actively involved in several projects at any one time. The Project Designer may work independently or may assist or be assisted by, other engineers and technical staff, who will form a Design Team under the supervision of the Civil Engineer Manager General (Project Coordinator). The Project Coordinator will provide responsible charge oversight of engineering work in accordance with Act 367, Engineer, Land Surveyor, and Geologist Registration Law. The Project Designer will assemble or assist with the assembly of the various data, calculations, and sketches of the component parts of the project into a complete set of contract plans and technical specifications for the project. The Project Designer will be mentored by Professional Engineers who will oversee and assist the Project Designer with assigned work.Qualifications:

  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements - Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program; OR one year of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; OR four years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate's degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering disciple; OR five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Condition of Employment:  possession of a valid driver's license
